Welcome to Our Library!

March 23rd we celebrated Spring!

 "Mr.K" from Exordium leads a workshop on "Tracks and Traces" on Saturday, March 9th.

The workshop's finale was making a plaster cast of a deer track to take home!!

Richard Bingham recently spoke about Stars in the Window, a book written by his late wife, Anne, about an 11-year-old Colorado girl who befriends a Japanese -American woman during World War II.

Our sewing workshop on December 1st was attended by more than 20 kids!

We welcomed back Mike and the Big Blue Trunk for our End of Summer Celebration Friday August 10th!

The Kids played giant ring toss in addition to many other awesome activities!

Everyone enjoyed Lemonade, Ice Cream and Balloon Animals after some great outdoor games.

Our Summer Readers had a fantastic time with Ellie from "Ellie's Preschool Parties" on June 26th!

Tim Brookes presented "Disappearing Alphabets and the Future of the Written Word" on June 13th. Tim brought some amazing examples of alphabets that are nearing extinction.

On Friday, May 11th Folsom School children listen to Duncan McDougall, a storyteller from the Children's Literacy Foundation. CLiF also awarded us a grant of over a hundred new books for the library!!!

Library patrons enjoy a conversation with Douglas Brooks after his lecture on Japanese boat building on April 18th.

UVM Professor Paul Bierman presents his program, "Remaking the Landscape, 1958-1978: Interstate Highways Come to Vermont" on Wednesday, March 28th.

Our Pajama Story Hour for toddlers was held last week on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm. These brave souls came out in single digit temperatures! Hope to see you next month!!

Authors Nan O'Brien and James "Buddy" Edgerton show slides from Buddy's childhood in West Arlington where he grew up next door to the artist Norman Rockwell. Buddy often modeled for Rockwell's paintings and magazine covers and he recounts his memories in their book, "The Unknown Rockwell".

The Third Annual Garden/Book Show was held on July 29th and 30th. Aren't you inspired to enter an arrangement next year?
The South Hero Land Trust won the "Cornucopia Award for Joyful Sustainability" for their interpretation of Nicola Smith's book "Harvest".

Waite and Matthew Cleborne-Cartwright won the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" award for their arrangements expressing Lisa See's book "Shanghai Girls" and Michael Connelly's "Void Moon".

Patricia Hedman won the "Best in Show" award for her beautiful expression of Debbie Macomber's "Susannah's Garden".

Other winners were Lyn Jarvis for John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" which won the "Most Ironic Award". Marco Ayala for Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth" which won the "The Best Metaphorical Image" award. And last but not least Diana Cleborne and Penny Cunningham shared first place in the "Most Creative Use of a Librarian's Free Time" category for their arrangements of Philippa Gregory's "The White Queen" and Barbara Kingsolver's "The Bean Trees".

Community members enjoy our most recent Reading & Discussion series, "A Mysterious Lens" sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. Look for our next series in the fall and join us!!

Audience members listen to Art Cohn, director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum give a talk on the "Steamboats of Lake Champlain" in our community room on Wednesday, February 16th. Art was both very knowledgeable and entertaining, a delight to listen to.

Members of the Fiddleheads: Sterling, Oliver, Eileen, and McKinley play at our 6th Annual Community Dance and Library Celebration on Saturday, February 12th in the Folsom School gym. They are a very talented group of young muscians led by caller Mark Sustic of Fletcher.

South Hero youngsters who participated in our Summer Reading Program "Make a Splash READ" enjoy Reading Celebration Day with "Mike and The Big Blue Trunk" on Friday, August 7th.

On Wednesday, July 28th, well-known author and Middlebury College Writer-in-Residence, Julia Alvarez signs autographs after her talk about her new novel, "Return to Sender". Island visitors and South Hero residents alike claimed the evening a rousing success!!

Sandy Riggen from Cambridge, Vemont's Brown and Jenkins Trading Company which specializes in gourmet coffee gave a talk, "From Crop to Cup" about how coffee travels from fields to your breakfast table on Saturday, July 10th.

Tom Joyce, the Magic Man entertains 61(!!) South Hero children once again with his magic tricks on June 29th as part of our Summer Reading Program: Make a Splash READ! He's a favorite of ours to be sure!

Peter Burns presented a delightful mix of stories, songs, riddles and stunts all featuring water on June 24th as the first entertainer for our Summer Reading Program: Make a Splash READ!

Library patrons enjoy Colchester author, Diane Imrie's talk about her wonderful new cookbook, "Cooking Close to Home, a year of seasonal recipes". We especially enjoyed the Asparagus and Brie Soup samples! Yum!!!!!

CIDER folks and Folsom School students read from Barre author Katherine Patterson's new book, "The Day of the Pelican" as part of Vermont Reads, a statewide, one-book community reading program sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. Copies available to the public after April 24th. Bill Biddle of North Hero will lead a discussion on Wednesday, May 12th at 6:30 pm. Drop by soon for your copy!!

Youngsters enjoy getting up close and personal with a new friend during The North Branch Nature Center's Amphibian Monitoring Program at the SHCL on March 10th.

Dancers enjoy the music of Mark Sustic and the Fiddleheads at the 5th Annual Community Dance and Library Celebration on Friday, February 12th. A great time was had by all! Remember to join us next year!!!

A Henna Party was held at the library on Saturday, December 12th. Mehndi artist Parvin Pothiawala from Essex Junction decorated over 40 hands (and a few feet!!). Mehndi is the application of henna, a natural burgundy dye, as a temporary form of skin decoration.
